(OTTAWA. ONTARIO) Water Ski and Wakeboard Canada is pleased to congratulate the Canadian Adaptive Water Ski Team who earned a total of five medals and placed 4thoverall at the 2019 Disabled Water Ski World Championships, July 25-28 in Skarnes Norway. Seven athletes represented the Canadian Adaptive Water Ski Team at the biennial event. More than 30 athletes from 11 countries participated in the championships.
Within each event (slalom, trick and jump), athletes were grouped into three categories of seated (paraplegics and quadriplegics), standing (arm and/or leg disabilities with or without prosthesis) and vision impaired (partially or totally blind). Each competitor in the three categories was awarded in each round of each event a certain number of points according to the relationship of his/her score to the minimum score needed to set or equal a world record in the event for the same disability category and gender, as it stood on Jan. 1, 2019.
Team Canada earned a total of five individual medals and were represented by: Nolan Barnes (SK), Ashley Baerg (SK), Blake Lamontagne (SK), Ryan Riehl (SK), Jake Thomas (ON), Jon Thurston (ON) and Jacob Wasserman (SK). The team was led by Adaptive National Team Head Coach David Wassill, Assistant Team Coach Lisa Williams and Communications Coordinator Madison Toombe.
Nolan Barnes (SK), Ashley Baerg (SK) and Blake Lamontagne (SK) all made it into the finals.
Ashley Baerg (SK), qualified for the finals in all three events (seated jump, seated slalom and seated trick). Baerg won gold medals in both seated women’s jump (59ft) and seated women’s overall with a final score of 2452.28; and silver in women’s overall (tournament overall). Ashley also claimed 4thplace in both seated slalom and seated trick. Congratulations Ashley!
Nolan Barnes (SK),qualified for the finals in men’s seated jump and men’s seated slalom.Barnes set a new World record in MP2men’s seated slalom (0.00/40/18.25). He claimed silver in men’s seated overall, and bronze in men’s overall (tournament overall). Congratulations Nolan!
